With SSL Certificates, if the browser used by the client was issued BEFORE the SSL issuer had their company recognized by the browser developers, then the browser will not recognize the SSL Certificate issuer. Sure, the web surfer will be able to install the certificate, but in some ways it defeats the purpose of having a SSL Certificate, if the web surfer needs to take an extra step to verify the validity of the web site.
In addition to cost, consider how long the company has been around, and find out which version of MS Internet Explorer and which versions of Netscape their SSL Certificates are preinstalled in.
